Options To Attach Your Trellis At The Ground

When building a garden trellis with EMT conduit, how you anchor it to the ground matters just as much as the structure itself. Soil type, wind exposure, and whether the trellis needs to be removable should all be considered when choosing the best ground attachment method.

Option 1:

Just put it on the ground!

The simplest approach is to set the EMT on the soil or driving the EMT directly into the soil.

  • Pros: Quick and easy

  • Cons: Not very stable, harder to level out the trellis

Option 2:

Slide the trellis over a rebar stake

This option limits the amount of side to side movement, and also reduces the settling of the trellis into the ground. If you can, save yourself some money by cutting down long lengths of rebar into shorter pieces.

  • Pros: Relatively stable and inexpensive

  • Cons: Harder to level the trellis than Option 3

Option 3:

Slide the trellis over a concrete form stake

This option provides similar benefits to option 2. The concrete form stake (found at the hardware store) has holes in it that you can put a screw in. That way you can dial in the levelness of the trellis. #8 screws usually fit in the stake holes, but you may want to experiment with this.

  • Pros: Trellis is able to be leveled

  • Cons: More expensive than Option 1 and may be more expensive than Option 2 if you cannot cut down long lengths of rebar.

Option 4:

Secure the trellis to a concrete form stake with a conduit coupling

This option adds a conduit coupling (found at the hardware store) to Option 3.

  • Pros: The trellis is able to be leveled, and it will resist light upward force.

  • Cons: More expensive than Option 3

Option 5:

Mount to raised bed

Use the Sacramento Garden Trellis (SGT) Wood Mount to secure the conduit to an existing wooden raised bed. The mount comes with holes for 2 wood screws and 1 self drilling screw (found at the hardware store). Find SGT wood mount on our Portals Storefront.
